You Have To Do What's Best For Your Child
There is an article in the SMN about kids transferring to elite academies for their last few years of high school. Some feel that a kid should never leave their hometown to pursue something that's bigger. I disagree.
Imagine if your child was a budding actor or a dancer. He or she has a chance to make it big. Do you spend your time with the high school drama teacher for 90 min a day, or go to an environment where you have many actors trying to get higher level training? If one of my kids had a special talent and could attend an elite program, I'm game.
You are not turning your back on on your hometown. In fact, you're helping put your hometown on the map.
Nolan Smith, Trae Broadnax, and Will Richardson have all decided to take their talents to elite programs. They are looking to train in an environment where they are around better players and better competition. The competition at Calvary, Islands, and Liberty County is not the same as IMG, Monteverdi or Oak Hill. Those are national programs.
It also opens up the doors for other kids to step in those positions at the local high schools. I'm sure these kids will not forget where they came from and who helped to make them what they are today.
Hopefully, someone will open up an academy in Georgia or Savannah that will be on the level of IMG. It would be great to see more kids make it to the pros.
